2024 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VS. 2024 FORD EXPLORER: PERFORMANCE AND ENGINE OPTIONS

Jeep uses its 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine in its two- and three-row Grand Cherokee models. This engine produces 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. You can opt for a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine on the three-row trims. This powertrain has an impressive 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque with a 7,200-pound towing capacity.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe  plug-in hybrid powertrain uses a 2.0-liter I-4 turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor. As a result, this hybrid engine produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque with a 6,000-pound towing capacity.

You can get the Grand Cherokee in a rear-oriented drivetrain or opt for one of three four-wheel-drive (4WD) systems. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II offer various levels of 4WD performance depending on your needs.

Jeep also has its Quadra-Lift air suspension system available on most models. Quadra-Lift automatically lowers the vehicle at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics and fuel economy. In off-road situations, you can raise the ride height to clear obstacles.

We recommend you add Jeep’s Selec-Terrain Traction Management System for more control over various surfaces and weather conditions. Selectable drive modes include Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand, and they activate with the turn of a dial.

The Trailhawk 4xe trim takes off-road capabilities to the extreme and has Jeep’s Trail Rated Badge. Trailhawk 4xe’s specialized equipment, like the raised air intake and water sealing, lets you cross water depths up to 24 inches.

Ford Explorer has a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 turbo engine in the lower models. This engine generates 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque with a towing capacity of 5,300 pounds. Top Explorer models use Ford’s 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with twin turbochargers, producing 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque with a 5,600-pound towing capacity.

The Explorer comes standard with rear-wheel drive. You can opt for Ford’s Intelligent 4WD system for added traction and control. Ford equips every trim with its Terrain Management System with seven selectable drive modes.

2024 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VS. 2024 FORD EXPLORER: INTERIOR AND COMFORT

Both vehicles have premium cloth seats on the lower trims and switch to synthetic materials in midrange models. Top-tier trims have premium leather upholstery. As you move higher up the trim levels, you see added features such as heated and ventilated seats. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a massage option for the front seats, which the Explorer doesn’t.

Three-row Grand Cherokee models seat up to seven, but we recommend the second-row captain’s chairs. You can add a second-row center console or keep the space clear for getting to the third row without climbing. Ford doesn’t offer the center console.

In-vehicle tech remains similar in both vehicles. Grand Cherokee has a 10.25-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, while Ford’s touch screen measures 10.1 inches. Three significant differences are that the Grand Cherokee has an optional front-passenger touch screen, a rear-seat video monitor, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

2024 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VS. 2024 FORD EXPLORER: SAFETY AND DRIVER-ASSISTANCE FEATURES

Jeep and Ford offer suites of driver-assist technologies, such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. However, the Grand Cherokee has some notable additions that the Explorer lacks.

For example, the Grand Cherokee has a 10-inch full-color head-up display and a night-vision system that helps you spot pedestrians and animals in low-visibility situations. Jeep’s Hands-Free Active Driving Assist enhances your adaptive cruise control and enables hands-free driving on approved roadways.

2024 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VS. 2024 FORD EXPLORER: FUEL EFFICIENCY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Jeep’s Pentastar V-6 engine gets 26 mpg on the highway, while the HEMI V-8 gets 22 mpg on the freeway. For maximum economy, the 4xe hybrid powertrain gets you 56 MPGe.

With the four-cylinder engine, the Explorer gets up to 28 mpg on the interstate. The V-6 variant achieves 26 mpg. Unfortunately, Ford doesn’t make a hybrid powertrain for the Explorer.

With a similar fuel efficiency rating on gas models, the difference is in Jeep’s 4xe hybrid powertrain. This engine has the most negligible environmental impact.

2024 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VS. 2024 FORD EXPLORER: PRICE AND VALUE FOR MONEY

Jeep makes the standard two-row Grand Cherokee in nine gas-powered trims and six 4xe hybrid powertrain configurations. You can opt for three-row models on most trims as designated by the L in the trim name. Ford produces its three-row Explorer in eight gas-powered trims without hybrid powertrain options.

You have more trims to choose from with Jeep, so there’s a Grand Cherokee to suit any lifestyle or budget. There’s a slight cost increase when choosing the Grand Cherokee, but you get that back and add impressive value with additional tech, comfort, and power you won’t have with the Explorer.
